Adaptive Reuse/CA

2022

What was once a home to the Samuel Haas Trimmed Hat Company, The Draper blends its rich history with modern, eclectic design. This adaptive reuse project revitalizes the six-story structure, honoring its industrial roots while introducing vibrant, contemporary living spaces.

The Draper comprises one-hundred units, and reimagined tenant amenity spaces. Our design intent sought to question established apartment building tropes - the always-empty lobby, the sad second entry, and meager gym equipment. Preferring instead to maximize the buildings identity within the context of modern amenities.

Grappling with context, history, and appropriateness, we deliberated over every amenity space looking for special ways in which we could cull the eclectic history. Simple handmade and crafted head covering themed decor pieces in interesting, and often imperfect shapes are sprinkled throughout.
